Farming is a skill where players plant seeds and harvest crops. These crops include vegetables, herbs, hops, wood-bearing trees, cacti, and mushrooms. The harvested items serve various purposes, such as training Herblore and Cooking, and many players sell their harvests for profit. Each player has exclusive access to the plants they grow.
Crops grow based on set timings, even when a player logs out, allowing for significant experience gains in a short in-game time, especially with high-experience crops like trees. Players can maximize their experience by planning farming runs to grow multiple plants simultaneously.
Farming training centers around recurring tree runs, a highly effective method for gaining Farming experience. Unlike spending hours actively training, players need only invest a few minutes per day in doing 1 or 2 runs. During this short time, they accumulate significant Farming experience, allowing them to pursue other activities while waiting for the crops to grow. Though tree growth takes a long time in real-time, the active commitment remains minimal.
It's important to note that tree runs come with costs, as some saplings and protection payments can be expensive. To ensure a smooth experience, it's recommended to have a decent capital for purchasing Farming supplies in bulk and a reliable money-making method to sustain the costs. While herb runs can be profitable and offer decent Farming experience, exploring alternative money-making strategies might lead to even greater profits.

Completing the following quests grants a total of 32,500 experience, which will get the player up to level 38 in Farming. This skips much of the tediousness of low-level Farming and allows the player to do effective farm runs immediately:
1. Goblin generals subquest of Recipe for Disaster
2. Fairytale I - Growing Pains
3. Forgettable Tale...
4. The Garden of Death
5. Garden of Tranquillity
6. Enlightened Journey
7. My Arm's Big Adventure
The most efficient way to gain Farming experience involves planting the highest-tier tree, fruit tree, and hardwood tree saplings, along with special
tree saplings like calquat, celastrus, crystal, and redwood. Once the trees have grown, players check the health of the fully grown trees for Farming experience, pay the farmer to chop them down, and replant new trees.
Tree runs offer a passive and incredibly fast experience rate. For instance, a single 5-minute tree run yielding 100,000 Farming experience effectively translates to 1,200,000 experience per hour (12 runs per actively spent hour). During this time, players can engage in other activities while waiting for the trees to grow, such as training other skills.
Though limited to 1 or 2 runs per day, the cumulative impact of consistent tree runs far outpaces other methods providing faster real-time experience, like farming allotments. Prioritizing tree runs is essential for Farming training, and active training methods should be considered only if Farming is the last skill to level 99. With fairly consistent tree runs, reaching level 99 Farming should take around 3-4 months at most.
Recommended quests and stats for efficient Farming training:
1. Complete Tree Gnome Village and The Grand Tree quests for access to spirit trees, which offer convenient transportation to various locations.
2. Complete Bone Voyage for access to three hardwood patches on Fossil Island, ideal for advanced tree planting.
3. Complete Plague City for Ardougne Teleport (or use Teleport to House to Rimmington) to access Brimhaven faster via Captain Barnaby (if redirection scrolls or a player-owned house in Brimhaven are unavailable).
4. Complete Tai Bwo Wannai Trio for the ability to use Tai bwo wannai teleport scrolls, granting access to the calquat patch. Alternatively, start Fairytale II - Cure a Queen for access to fairy rings.
5. Start Mourning's End Part I for access to the fruit tree patch in Lletya and teleport crystals.
6. Complete Song of the Elves for access to the crystal tree patch, an excellent option for high-level tree planting.
7. Have Construction level 40 to move the player-owned house to Brimhaven for easier access to the nearby patches.
8. Have Magic level 40 for casting teleportation spells; however, teleport tablets can be used as an alternative.
By completing these quests and achieving the suggested stats, you'll have a solid foundation to embark on efficient Farming training, making tree runs and other activities smoother and more rewarding.
When replanting trees, players should always pay the farmer to chop them down, as this is much faster and only incurs a small cost. However, the celastrus tree yields valuable harvest, making it worthwhile for some players to spend extra time gathering celastrus barks.
To ensure the trees' survival, it's generally best to pay the farmer to look after them, guaranteeing Farming experience upon checking their health. Yet, certain payments can be expensive, prompting some players to use ultracompost to minimize disease chances. This approach saves money, but can be slightly slower overall due to occasional tree deaths without
gaining experience. The Resurrect Crops Arceuus spell helps reduce such losses. After completing the elite tasks in the Falador Diary, the tree patch in Falador Park remains disease-free.
Buying saplings from the Grand Exchange saves time, though growing saplings oneself can save money. Saplings grow while stored in the bank, negating the need to keep them in the inventory. Players with level 68 Magic and having completed Dream Mentor can use the Humidify spell to water seedlings faster.
Farming regular trees is usually more expensive compared to other options. Players not in a hurry to level up Farming are advised to focus on fruit trees, hardwood trees, and special trees for more cost-effective experience. Depending on prices, farming palm trees may be a better choice than dragonfruit trees at higher levels, as the former costs 2.87 per experience, including protection payments, while the latter costs 8.13 per experience.
Note: You cannot un-note saplings at a tool leprechaun. If you lack spacefor all trees during a run, consider incorporating a bank stop to resupply.
Saplings:
6 tree saplings (one patch in the Farming Guild requires Farming 65 Farming to access)
6 fruit tree saplings (starting at Farming 27 Farming. One patch in the Farming Guild requires Farming 85 Farming to access)
3 hardwood saplings (starting at Farming 35 Farming. Requires completion of Bone Voyage to access)
1 calquat sapling (starting at Farming 72 Farming)
1 crystal sapling (starting at Farming 74 Farming)
1 celastrus sapling (starting at Farming 85 Farming)
1 redwood sapling (starting at Farming 90 Farming)
Other items:
Spade
Payments in bank notes (recommended)
Bottomless compost bucket containing ultracompost, or runes for Fertile Soil spell and volcanic ashes (after reading the ash covered tome) if not paying the farmer
Coins
Teleport tabs or runes for Taverley house or Falador teleport, Brimhaven house or Ardougne teleport, Catherby or Camelot teleport, Lumbridge teleport, and Varrock teleport.
Skills necklace (for the tree and fruit tree patches in the Farming Guild)
Ring of wealth (for access to the spirit tree at the Grand Exchange and slightly faster access to the Falador tree patch) Alternatively, Falador Teleport and Varrock Teleport to the Grand Exchange (after medium Varrock Diary) can be used instead.
Teleport crystal or its eternal version (for access to Prifddinas and Lletya)
Digsite pendant (for the hardwood tree patches in Fossil Island)
Slayer ring (optional for Gnome Stronghold tree patch)
Tai bwo wannai teleport scroll (costs 8,338, recommended for the calquat patch)
Stamina potion
Farmer's outfit or graceful outfit (optional)
For hardwood trees, if the protection payment is skipped and ultracompost (491) is used instead, growing teaks (Farming 35 Farming) costs 0.12 coins per experience, while mahogany trees (Farming 55 Farming) costs 0.19 coins per experience.
For specialty trees, growing calquat tree (Farming 72 Farming) costs 0.07 coins per experience, requiring payment of 8 poison ivy berries.
Normal Tree
Fruit Tree
Hardwood tree
Special tree
To begin the Farming training, head to the Grand Exchange and purchase all the required saplings, payments, and teleports.
During the first run, the player needs to rake all the patches. However, in subsequent runs, raking is only necessary if a growth cycle occurs between removing a tree and planting a new one. It's advisable to leave a rake with a Tool Leprechaun in case this situation arises. This ensures a smooth and efficient tree run without interruptions.
Example low-level tree run
Here's an example setup for a tree run, including 5 trees, 4 fruit trees, and 3 hardwood trees at level 35. Please note that the Lletya fruit tree and the tree and fruit tree patches in the Farming Guild are not included due to quest and level requirements.
The route assumes the player pays the farmers to chop down the trees and look after them.
Items needed:
Coins
Spade
Stamina potion
5 tree, 4 fruit tree, and 3 hardwood tree saplings
Payments in banknotes
Ring of wealth with at least 2 charges Alternatively, use Falador teleport then run to Falador Park Alternatively, run from Varrock tree patch to Grand Exchange
Teleports to Lumbridge, Varrock, and Catherby
Teleport to house tablets and redirection scrolls for access to Taverley and Brimhaven house portals Alternatively, use a teleport to Falador for the Taverley patch Alternatively, use a teleport to Ardougne or Rimmington for the Brimhaven patch

An Axe (Optional, if not paying for the farmers to remove the tree)
Steps to follow:
1. Teleport to Falador Park with the ring of wealth. Check the health of the tree and replant it.
2. Teleport to Taverley and run east (or run north from Falador) to the tree patch. Check the health of the tree and replant it.

Check the health of the fruit tree and replant it.
6. Talk to Elkoy again and follow him back through the maze, squeeze through the fence, and take the spirit tree to Gnome Stronghold. Run slightly east to the fruit tree patch. Check the health of the fruit tree and replant it.
7. Run south-west to the tree patch. Check the health of the tree and replant it.
8. Teleport to Catherby and run east to the fruit tree patch near the fishing spots. Check the health of the fruit tree and replant it.
9. Head to the Brimhaven fruit tree patch by using a house teleport to Brimhaven and running north. Alternatively, with the help of 480 coins, players can take the Charter ship from the Catherby Docks to Brimhaven, very close to the fruit tree patch. Another option is to teleport to Karamja with a charged amulet of glory and run westward.
10. Teleport to the Digsite by using a digsite pendant or Digsite teleport. Run to the barge, quick-travel to Fossil Island, and run to the hardwood tree patches slightly north. Check the health of the hardwood trees and replant them.
By following this route, players can efficiently complete their tree run and make progress in their Farming training.
