To begin the Family Crest quest, players should talk to Dimintheis, who resides in the fenced-off area of Varrock in the south-eastern region, next to the eastern clothing shop. He will express his concern about the lost family crest, which is crucial for proving his heritage and reclaiming his estate. Dimintheis explains that his sons took the crest with them when they left, but he is unsure of their current whereabouts. However, he recalls that Caleb was working as a chef in Catherby the last time he heard about him.
Head to Catherby, where you'll find Caleb in the middle of town, often inside a building with a sink. He may occasionally be seen wandering outside. Talk to Caleb, and he'll reveal that he and his brothers accidentally broke the family crest into three pieces, and each of them ended up with a part. Fortunately, he still has his piece, but he won't hand it over to just anyone. Caleb needs some fish for a special salad he's preparing for an important event. Help him gather the required ingredients, and he'll reward you with the piece of the crest.
You'll need cooked shrimp, salmon, tuna, bass, and swordfish for Caleb's salad. With the exception of salmon, all the other fish can be fished right there in Catherby. To obtain salmon, head to a lake just north of the bank in the nearby town of Seers' Village.
Once you have all the requested fish, give them to Caleb, and he'll fulfill his promise by providing you with the piece of the crest. He'll also share some valuable information with you, mentioning that the gem trader in Al Kharid might know more about the whereabouts of Avan.
An important reminder: Ensure that Caleb tells you about the other missing crest pieces. If he doesn't, the gem trader won't have the appropriate dialogue options, and you'll need to speak to Caleb again. It's necessary to talk to him immediately after receiving the crest piece to inquire about the other locations. Check the quest guide to ensure you've obtained the information about Avan's location before proceeding.
Note for low-level Ironman accounts without access to the Warriors' Guild: You can achieve 46 Fishing to catch a raw bass and 43 Cooking to cook it, or obtain it as a monster drop. Additionally, you can obtain cooked bass and cooked tuna by catching Gourmet implings with 28 Hunter skill.
To begin the next part of the quest, head to Al Kharid and talk to the gem trader. He will recall the person you're looking for and direct you to the north, towards a pit in the desert containing gold rocks. When you arrive at the pit, you'll find a man with a yellow cape wandering around near the entrance. This man is Avan, and he will confirm his identity when you ask him. However, Avan won't give you his crest piece unless you help him win the affection of a certain lady by obtaining a ring and necklace made of perfect gold. Unfortunately, the gold found in the desert isn't of high enough quality. Avan suggests seeking help from a dwarf named Boot, who might know more about where to find perfect gold.
Head to Falador (alternatively, use a combat bracelet to teleport to the Edgeville Monastery, or a skills necklace to the Mining Guild) and enter the Dwarven Mines. Once inside, proceed south-west from the northern entrance. You'll find Boot wandering around in the second alcove. Speak to him and inquire about perfect gold. Boot will suggest a likely location, a small dungeon located between Ardougne and Witchaven. You may have already been to this dungeon if you completed the Slug Menace quest.
Teleport or run to Ardougne and then go east, just outside the wall next to Witchaven. Prepare your pickaxe, some food, and gear, as there are level 28 hobgoblins, level 53 ogres, and level 122 hellhounds that you'll encounter and need to either fight or avoid. Although it is possible to mine the 'perfect' gold ores without combat, you may still be attacked.
Inside the cave, you'll find a small caged area to the east with several hellhounds and the gold rocks you need to mine. To the north and south, you'll see two rooms with levers inside and outside of them. You'll need to solve a lever puzzle to open the gate to the hellhounds. (If you need to return later, you won't have to go through these steps again to unlock the door.)
1. Go to the northern wall of the dungeon and pull the lever up.
2. Head into the southern room and pull the lever up.
3. Return to the northern wall and pull the lever down.
4. Enter the northern room and pull the lever up.
5. Leave the room and pull the lever on the northern wall up again.
6. Go back to the southern room and pull the lever down.
7. The hellhound room should now be unlocked.
8. Enter the hellhound room and mine at least two 'perfect' gold ores.
9. After mining the ores, leave the room and make your way out of the dungeon.
Note: If you're using boosts to increase your Mining level, be prepared with multiple boosts as the 'perfect' gold ore can take a while to respawn. Additionally, when entering the hellhound room, you can safespot the level 122 Hellhound near the first rock on the right by hugging the wall on your way in and attacking from behind a stalagmite.
To proceed, gather your rubies, ring mould, and necklace mould.
Head to any convenient furnace, such as the one in Al Kharid (you can use a ring of dueling to quickly teleport there).
Smelt the 'perfect' gold ore into 'perfect' gold bars.
Be cautious and select "Make 1" when using the 'perfect' gold bars on the furnace to avoid using all of them at once. You wouldn't want to run out of ore and have to return to the mine.
Now, use the resulting 'perfect' gold bars on the furnace again. This time, choose the options to create a 'perfect' ruby ring and a 'perfect' ruby necklace. It's important to make the 'perfect' versions as regular gold jewellery won't be sufficient.
Once you've successfully crafted the 'perfect' ring and 'perfect' necklace, make your way back to Al Kharid.
Present the 'perfect' ring and 'perfect' necklace to Avan.
As a reward, Avan will grant you the second piece of the crest and provide you with information on how to locate his brother.
Remember to take care when crafting the jewellery to ensure you don't use all your 'perfect' gold bars at once, leaving you short of the required materials for the quest. Good luck!
The last brother can be found on the 1st floor[UK] of the Jolly Boar Inn, located northeast of Varrock near the edge of the Wilderness. Remember to bring an antipoison potion as you head up to the 1st floor[UK] to find him in a room. Engage in conversation with him, and he'll reveal that he was bitten by a poisonous spider. Offer him the entire antipoison potion (not just one dose), and he'll be immensely grateful and able to share what happened.
According to him, he got overconfident and decided to take on the powerful demon named Chronozon. However, the demon was not impressed and sent him away while stealing the final piece of the crest. If you want the crest back, you'll need to finish what Johnathon started.
Important: Be warned that you will be heading into the Wilderness, where chaos druids are a popular spot for player killing.
Chronozon can be found near the poison spiders, close to the Earth obelisk in the Edgeville Dungeon.
Before facing Chronozon, make sure you bring sufficient food, armor, and an antipoison potion to deal with the poison spiders. Additionally, come prepared with enough runes to cast each elemental blast spell (Wind Blast, Water Blast, Earth Blast, and Fire Blast) at least once. You may need multiple castings, especially if you are of lower level, as splashing the spell on Chronozon won't count. You must successfully hit him with each elemental blast to weaken him and make the battle a bit easier. Once you've weakened him with all the spells, you can proceed to attack him with any combat class.
Note: When you successfully weaken Chronozon with Wind Blast, Water Blast, Earth Blast, and Fire Blast, a text will appear in the chatbox stating "Chronozon weakens....". If you fail to land all the spells successfully, he won't die. Also, if you take too long to defeat him, his weakness will wear off, and you'll need to weaken him again. Once you finally defeat him, claim the crest piece and make your way out of there. It's highly recommended to have a one-click teleport, such as a Varrock teletab, to swiftly escape the dungeon after defeating Chronozon.
With all three crest pieces in your possession, combine them to create the Family Crest. Now, return to Varrock and hand over the crest to Dimintheis, who will be overjoyed to have it back.
Congratulations! You have successfully completed the quest!
After finishing the quest, it is highly recommended to speak with Dimintheis to begin the Family Pest miniquest. When you approach one of the brothers to imbue the gauntlets, you'll have the chat option that completes 1/4th of the miniquest.
Well done on your achievements, and good luck with the subsequent miniquest! If you have any other questions or need further assistance, feel free to ask.
