Farming from Level 1 to 99 Guide OSRS

OSRS Farming by VolcabanRS on DeviantArt

Agriculture is a skill in which players plant seeds and harvest various crops, ranging from vegetables, herbs, and hops to woody trees, cacti, and mushrooms. The harvested products have a wide range of applications and are popular for Herblore and Cooking training. Many players choose to sell their harvests for significant profits. It is important to note that crops grown in farming patches are only accessible to the player who cultivated them.

Overview

When starting the Agriculture skill training in RuneScape, players begin by raking weeds in one of the numerous farming patches scattered throughout the game. Once the land is cleared, the option to apply compost to the patch is presented, thereby reducing the chances of disease and potentially increasing crop yield when they reach maturity.

1. Compost: Compost can be acquired at farming shops or by placing a total of 15 weeds or other unwanted vegetables into a compost bin. Supercompost, which offers an even higher yield and further reduces the chances of disease, is obtained by filling the compost bin with higher-level agricultural products such as pineapples, watermelons, calquats, coconuts, and high-quality herbs. Ultracompost can be prepared by adding 25 volcanic ashes to a bin filled with supercompost or by adding two volcanic ashes to a bucket of supercompost. Players can also cast the "Fertile Soil" spell from the lunar spellbook at any time during the plant's growth cycle to apply the effects of supercompost.

2. Seed Acquisition: Seeds are generally easy to obtain, whether by buying them from other players, at stalls, stealing them through thieving, or as loot from various monsters. Lower or intermediate-level seeds are usually inexpensive, ranging from 1 to 20 coins each, while higher-level ones, such as tree, fruit tree, and especially high-tier herb seeds, can be more expensive due to their difficulty of acquisition and their production of valuable experience and/or harvested items.

3. Growth and Disease: After a predetermined time, crops mature and are ready to be harvested, as long as they have not become diseased or died during their growth. Crops continue to grow even if the player is offline, allowing for planting a seed and returning at any time. Once mature, crops remain in the patch indefinitely until harvested, with no risk of dying.

However, during this period, there is a chance for crops to become diseased and die if neglected. To mitigate this risk, the use of supercompost or ultracompost is recommended. Additionally, to ensure plant maturity, players can hire nearby gardeners to watch over and care for the crops.

6. Secateurs: A fundamental tool for pruning and caring for your crops, ensuring healthy growth. Secateurs.png

7. Watering can: Used to keep your plants adequately hydrated. The amount of water is crucial for optimal growth. Watering can.png

8. An Axe or GP to Remove Developed Trees: Make sure to have a suitable axe or enough gold coins to pay a gardener and remove fully developed trees from your patches.

Optional

Magic Secateurs: This item is a reward from the quest “Fairytale 1 - Growing Pains”. When worn it increases your chances of getting more crop yield when you harvest your fully grown plants. It must be in your hands for this effect to take place, if it’s in your inventory it will only act as a regular secateurs.

Bottomless Compost Bucket: This item is a reward from the boss Hespori but it can be bought from the grand exchange as well. It can store 10,000 uses of a single type of compost within it, so it’s extremely useful to make your inventory less clogged.

Herb Sack: Another item to help your inventory stay clean during a farming run. You can get this item for 750 slayer points from any slayer master or you can buy it for 250 Tithe farm points. When the sack is opened any herb you harvest will directly go inside the sack.

Farmer’s Outfit: Farmer’s outfit is recommended for players that want to have the best xp rates while training farming. This outfit provides an xp bonus for every piece worn. It can be obtained from the Tithe farm shop for a total of 400 points.

Seed Box: This is another item that can be purchased from the Tithe farm for 250 points. You can store 6 different types of seeds in it to save some inventory space. Do note that you have to remove the seeds from the box to use them.

Amulet Of Nature: This item is used for monitoring the state of a single farming patch. Simply use it on an empty patch to bind it to the patch. It will then notify you of the state of your patch.

Disease Free Patches: There are 3 disease-free herb patches on Old School Runescape. One is in Hosidius which unlocks with 50% Hosidius favour. The other two unlock after completing the quest “My Arm’s Big Adventure” and “Making Friends with My Arm”. Patches are located in Trollheim and Weiss respectively. These patches are really useful for planting high tier seeds to make money as you are guaranteed money without any diseases.

Farming Methods

Unlike other skills, farming does not require constant active participation. You can choose from various methods outlined below and train farming at your own pace. Remember that you also have the option to hire farmers to take care of your crops and alleviate concerns about diseases.

1. Levels 1 - 38 Quests: The early levels of farming can become tedious. If you prefer to skip these levels, complete the following quests:

- Recipe for Disaster, Goblin Generals subquest
- Fairytale I, Growing Pains
- Forgettable Tale...
- The Garden of Death
- Garden of Tranquility
- Enlightened Journey
- My Arm’s Big Adventure

2. Levels 1 - 13 Sulphurous Fertilizer: These can be created after reaching 5% Hosidius favor, granting 2 agriculture experience each. By reaching 100% favor, you will directly achieve level 13 in farming. This method unlocks patches and a farming guild.

3. Levels 1 - 15 Farming Assignments: Train your farming regularly by planting and harvesting crops at each farming location.

4. Levels 15 - 99 Tree Runs: The most effective way to train farming is by planting trees, which provide the best experience drops. There are various types of trees:

- Regular
- Fruit trees
- Special trees (calquat, celastrus, crystal, redwood)
- Hardwood

Due to growth cycles, realistically, you can only run one tree per day. Always try to plant the best available trees for maximum experience.

- Levels 15 - 27: Oaks
- Levels 27 - 35: Oaks/Willows + Apple trees
- Levels 35 - 55: Willows/Maple trees + Banana/Pineapple trees + Teak trees
- Levels 55 - 72: Maple/Yew trees + Pineapple/Papaya trees + Mahogany trees
- Levels 72 - 90: Yew/Magic trees + Palm/Dragonfruit trees + Mahogany trees + Calquat trees + Celastrus trees
- Levels 90 - 99: Magic trees + Palm/Dragonfruit trees + Mahogany trees + Calquat trees + Celastrus trees + Redwood trees

5. Levels 74 - 99 Tithe Farm: Tithe Farm is a minigame that provides consistent farming experience. If you aim to reach level 99 as quickly as possible, include Tithe Farm sessions between your farming runs. Here, you can also acquire your farmer's outfit, seed box, and gricoller's can.
