The rune throwing axe, like all throwing axes, is a members-only ranged throwing weapon and is the second most powerful type of throwing axe, behind the dragon thrownaxe. To wield a rune throwing axe, the player must have at least 40 Ranged.
This type of weapon provides players with the ability to attack their opponents from a distance, offering flexibility in combat. With a Ranged level requirement of 40, the rune throwing axe is a solid choice for players looking to enhance their ranged attack capabilities.

The rune thrownaxe possesses a special attack known as "Chainhit." When activated, this special attack allows the thrownaxe to ricochet off the target and hit multiple opponents within a 3-tile radius, forming a 7x7 square centered on the target. It's important to note that the Chainhit can only rebound to other enemies in a multicombat area.
The special attack can target up to 5 opponents, but it won't return to its original target after chaining to another enemy. An accuracy roll is made after each target hit, and if failed, the sequence ends. Each hit with the special attack consumes 10% of the player's special attack energy, meaning three hits use 30% energy. The damage calculation for Chainhit is unique and doesn't consider offensive Prayers, like Eagle Eye, in determining a player's maximum Ranged hit.
It's worth mentioning that the attack speed of Chainhit is one tick slower than the rune thrownaxe's regular attack. In the rapid style, the attack interval is 5 ticks (3.0 seconds), while in accurate or long-range styles, it is 6 ticks (3.6 seconds).
Players often leverage this special attack in Waterbirth Island Dungeon as an efficient means of reaching the Dagannoth Kings. By using a pet rock and the rune thrownaxe, players can navigate the dungeon's sub-levels independently. When applied to the middle barricade support, the rune thrownaxe's special attack can destroy all three door-supports without requiring another player to attack from the opposite side.
