RuneLite Desktop Will Stop Working in 2026

If you're still using the classic RuneLite desktop client with a legacy Old School RuneScape account, it's time to prepare for one of the biggest account changes in the game's history.

Jagex has officially confirmed that the standalone RuneLite desktop login system will stop working before the end of 2026. While an exact date hasn't been announced yet, the company expects the full transition to happen around November or December 2026.

This means every player who still logs in using the old account system will eventually be required to migrate to a Jagex Account to continue playing.

Why Is RuneLite Desktop Being Discontinued?

This isn't a decision that came out of nowhere.

For quite some time, Jagex moderators have hinted that maintaining two separate authentication systems wasn't sustainable. Since the launch of Jagex Accounts in 2023, the company has been operating two different login infrastructures:

The legacy RuneScape login system that players have used for years.
The newer Jagex Account system integrated with the Jagex Launcher.

Keeping both systems online requires additional maintenance, support, and security resources. After three years of running both side by side, Jagex has decided it's finally time to retire the old login method.

The game itself isn't changing only the way players authenticate their accounts.

What Exactly Is Changing?

Many players have misunderstood the announcement.

RuneLite is NOT shutting down.

Instead, the standalone RuneLite desktop login will no longer be supported.

RuneLite will continue to work exactly as it does today, but you'll launch it through the Jagex Launcher, which already supports official third-party clients.

If you already use RuneLite from the Jagex Launcher, you won't notice any difference.

The only players affected are those who still log in using legacy RuneScape accounts.

Why Is Jagex Making This Mandatory?

According to Jagex, the biggest reason is security.

Legacy RuneScape accounts were created long before modern account protection existed. While many players have added two-factor authentication over the years, the old login system still lacks many of the security features built into Jagex Accounts.

With a Jagex Account, players gain access to:

Stronger account protection.
Modern authentication systems.
Improved account recovery options.
Backup recovery codes.
Better protection against phishing and account hijacking.
Multiple characters managed from a single login.

Jagex also explained that future account features are being built around this new infrastructure, making it impossible to continue supporting the old system forever.

When Will You Need to Migrate?

There is currently no official deadline, but Jagex has stated that the mandatory migration is expected to happen toward the end of 2026, with November or December being the current target.

Once the final date is announced, players who haven't migrated won't lose their characters or progress.

Instead, the next time they attempt to log in, they'll be prompted to complete the migration before they can continue playing.

Your account data, items, quests, and progress will remain safe throughout the process.

What Happens If You Ignore the Migration?

Nothing will happen immediately. However, once the transition becomes mandatory, you won't be able to continue logging in with your old credentials.

Instead, you'll be redirected to create or link a Jagex Account before being allowed back into the game.

Your progress won't disappear, but the migration will become unavoidable.

Will RuneLite Plugins Still Work?

One of the biggest concerns in the community was whether RuneLite plugins would stop working.

Fortunately, Jagex confirmed that players will still be able to use authorized third-party clients, including RuneLite, through the Jagex Launcher.

All your favorite plugins, overlays, and quality-of-life features will continue to function just as they do today.

Do Steam, Google, Apple, or Game Center Players Need to Worry?

Not really.

Players who already log in through:

Steam
Android
Apple

will continue using their existing login methods.

These platforms already include modern authentication systems that meet Jagex's security requirements, so no immediate changes are expected for those users.

Will You Lose Your Character Name?

Migrating to a Jagex Account does not change your in-game character name.

Your characters remain exactly the same.

The only difference is that multiple RuneScape characters can now be managed under a single Jagex Account, making it much easier to organize alts.

What About Two-Factor Authentication?

If you're currently using the old RuneScape Authenticator, you'll need to set up authentication again after migrating.

Jagex recommends enabling:

Email verification
Two-factor authentication
Recovery codes

Perhaps the most important step is saving your recovery codes somewhere secure.

If you lose access to both your email and your authenticator without those backup codes, recovering your account can become much more difficult.

Should You Migrate Now?

Even though the mandatory deadline hasn't arrived yet, there's little reason to wait.

Migrating early gives you time to:

Verify everything works correctly.
Secure your account.
Organize multiple characters.
Avoid last-minute server congestion when everyone else starts migrating.

Waiting until the final deadline only increases the chances of running into delays or unexpected issues.

What Does This Mean for Account Trading?

This announcement could also impact the account market.

Legacy RuneScape accounts may gradually lose their appeal once migration becomes mandatory.

Since every account will eventually need to be linked to a Jagex Account, the distinction between legacy accounts and migrated accounts will largely disappear, reducing any premium value some buyers previously associated with older login credentials.
