Instead of continuing the events of Vanilla and eventually offering an alternate path to Burning Crusade, the project could be set before the events of Warcraft III.

Technically, that would make Classic Plus something closer to a prequel.

What Could Classic Plus Include?

Going back to an earlier point in Warcraft's timeline would give Blizzard the opportunity to reinterpret different elements of the universe, including:

• Completely reimagined zones.
• A large amount of fanservice and references designed for longtime players.
• A completely new story packed with lore.

That would be a massive departure from what many players expected when they heard the term Classic Plus.

One of the most interesting aspects of this rumored direction would be the possibility of seeing characters like Arthas and Illidan during an earlier point in their stories.

Another possible scenario has recently emerged. An Aorus account on Twitter posted a promotional image in collaboration with Blizzard featuring the Dark Portal completely shut down, which has fueled speculation about a storyline focused entirely on the world of Azeroth.

If all of this information turns out to be accurate, Blizzard could be facing a pretty delicate situation.

On one hand, building something completely new could be a massive opportunity. If the content is genuinely fresh while Blizzard still manages to preserve the spirit that made Classic special, a lot of players could be excited to jump in.
